What if the stories we tell about tomorrow shape what we're willing to build today?

For decades, the dominant narrative has been one of collapse — climate disaster, resource wars, societal breakdown. Dystopia has become our default imagination. But solarpunk refuses both the paralysis of doomerism AND the complacency of techno-optimism. Between despair and denial lies a third path: clear-eyed hope grounded in practical work.

This isn't green capitalism. It's not primitivism either. Solarpunk is the farmer building with clay and stone. Communities converting urban lots into farms. Students building food forests. Tool libraries. Mutual aid networks. Community solar.

Because environmental destruction and social oppression share the same roots — the logic of domination that treats nature and people as resources to exploit. Climate justice IS racial justice IS economic justice. We build for everyone or we build for no one at all.

The future isn't something that happens to us. It's something we build — choice by choice, action by action, relationship by relationship.

The systems of extraction have enormous inertia. But they're also fragile — dependent on endless growth on a finite planet, on exploited labor, on externalized costs that can no longer be postponed.

We have something they don't: the truth, the urgency of necessity, and the power of people working together.

The question is not whether we CAN build solarpunk futures. The question is whether we WILL.

Cleaning up after a tree fell on the garden, then using chop-and-drop mulching to build soil fertility. The tree came down across the grapes and potatoes, but we got it cleared and turned it into an opportunity to expand the growing area.

What started as storm cleanup turned into a full garden walkthrough: cutting up the fallen tree, rescuing the squash bed, chop-and-drop around the kale and chickpeas, checking on the sunflowers and terraces, and a tour of the herb plantings, onions, Roman chamomile, lovage, and dill.

This is what permaculture looks like in practice: the weeds aren't waste, they're fertility. Cut them, drop them, let them feed the soil. Between chop-and-drop, compost, and running the chickens and ducks through in the off season, we can grow food here indefinitely without buying inputs.
