The ground freezes for weeks at a time. James and Michelle built a 1,300 square foot greenhouse designed to keep producing food straight through it — and almost none of what makes it work is visible. Hundreds of feet of pipe are buried in the soil beneath the floor. When the greenhouse overheats, warm air gets pushed down into that network and the ground absorbs it. When it cools, the same ground gives it back. The walls are rammed earth, packed twelve feet high into forms that had to hold under enormous pressure. The roof is carried by a single tamarack trunk, charred black with fire. Then, on the same property, they built a sauna — out of the same earth, with students who came to learn how.
