In 2020 they bought a small stone house in the Ligurian hills, a hundred years old and barely standing, and decided to bring it back themselves. What they found inside was worse than expected. The roof timbers had turned to dust. The inside walls crumbled at the touch. By the time they had finished clearing it out, four original walls were all that remained of the house. They could have poured concrete and been done in a year. Instead they went the other way — lime, hemp, terracotta, local stone. They spent twenty separate trips driving around the countryside collecting weathered stones, just so a new wall would sit next to a hundred-year-old one without looking new. Ten of the fifteen days it took to build that wall went into the stones alone. Some of it went wrong. Some of it took four months longer than planned. But the house they ended up with is the one they wanted: cool in the Italian summer, warm from a single stove in winter, and still unmistakably old.
