Feadship, Heesen, Mulder — some of the biggest names in Dutch boatbuilding. Then he bought a 1961 Mulder for himself, and found out that putting an old boat back together is nothing like making a new one. The yacht had been sitting for a long time. Sixty-five years of sun, water and weather leave their mark, and some of it only shows up once you start taking things apart. A lot of it could be saved. Some of it couldn’t. The hardest part wasn’t the work itself. It was deciding how much to change. Elan wanted a boat he could actually use — warm enough for winter weekends, easy enough to handle in a tight harbour. But he didn’t want to turn a 1961 yacht into a new one. Every decision came down to that balance.
